Port of Progreso, Yucatán
Founded by Don Juan Miguel Castro in 1872, the Port of Progreso showcases the beauty of nature while highlighting our vulnerability to environmental challenges. Initially, the region thrived on the sisal (henequen) industry, which was used by the Aztecs and Mayas for making fabrics and paper. To support the export of sisal, three 200-meter piers and a 6.5-kilometer viaduct were constructed, providing a depth of 15 feet. This port serves as a vital maritime connection between the Yucatán Peninsula and the world.
Chuburna and Sisal
Managed by cooperative groups of fishermen and community leaders, Chuburna is a significant ecotourism area rich in biodiversity. The region’s high alkalinity causes unique chemical reactions, transforming the usually turquoise waters into shades of purple, while cyanuric acid in other areas gives the water an orange hue. Dense vegetation, including mangrove ecosystems and lush greenery, characterizes this vibrant region.
